As first reported on the Pitch Black twitter account before being confirmed by the team Thursday afternoon, defender Greg Cochrane is joining San Antonio FC.
Cochrane comes most recently from Chicago Fire, but spent much of 2015 on loan to St. Louis FC. Before his time in Chicago, Cochrane was a second round pick in the MLS superdraft by LA Galaxy. The Louisville alum made 12 appearances for LA in 2013, another 12 for Chicago in 2014, and 3 more in 2015 before being loaned to St. Louis.
After his contract with Chicago ended, Cochrane went on trial to Falkenbergs FF, a team in the highest division of Swedish soccer. The trial didn’t work out for whatever reason and with most MLS training camps coming to a close this late in February, Cochrane’s best move for a significant amount of playing time in 2016 is SAFC. This is exactly the reason why USL starts their season almost a full month after MLS, and in this case San Antonio being a little behind ideal schedule works in their favor.
Barring new competition I expect Cochrane to make a strong case for, if not lockup immediately, the left back position in the starting XI.
Cochrane also seems to fit into SS&E’s trend of hiring good people who also happen to be good at their job. A great article documenting his experience with Locks of Love can be found here.
