San Antonio FC (5-5-5) traveled north to Oklahoma to face Tulsa Roughnecks FC (3-11-2) Sunday night. The match marks the halfway point of the inaugural regular season for the Texas club.

The first half was a sight all too familiar to SAFC fans as the Texas club was able to create many chances, but unable to put any into the back of the net. The surprise appearance of striker Jacques Francois on the injury report resulted in a familiar starting XI with Jason Johnson playing up top. The injury couldn’t have come at a worst time for the young striker who was named to the USL Team of the Week for his previous performance.

Before the second half got underway, defender Max Gunderson and forward Franck Tayou were subbed on for Palacios and Okiomah respectively. For Gunderson, a former Austin Aztex player, it was the first time seeing league play due to a crowded full back roster San Antonio built up. For Tayou, it was the earliest he’s come on in a match since coming to the league a few weeks ago.

The scoreboard was finally turned on in the 56th minute as Michael Reed bagged his second in two games off of a perfectly placed Rafa Castillo free kick. Frustration boiled over shortly after as an excessive tackle by Tulsa captain Sammy Ochoa earned him his 5th yellow card of the season, meaning the struggling Oklahoma club will be without their captain for their next match.

In the 81st minute, “Franck the Tank” Tayou blasted a ball in marking his second goal in three appearances for the Alamo City and making the score 0-2 for the visitors. Early in stoppage time, Tulsa showed a spark as they put one past Josh Ford. Despite some heart pounding moments in the remaining stoppage time, San Antonio held on to earn the win on the road.

From here, things get significantly tougher for the Texas club. Even though San Antonio has earned 10 points in their last 4 games, fans should be nervous. Their next match is a home bout against OKC Energy FC (5-2-6), a club that SAFC hasn’t beaten in their two meetings this season. After OKC, first place Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (9-2-5) and second place LA Galaxy II (7-2-8) come to town. Vancouver and SAFC have never played, but the Texas club did earn a point on the road against Los Dos in April.
