San Antonio FC will host Mexico’s Santos Laguna in an international club friendly match on July 8 at Toyota Field, the club announced today.
“We are delighted to bring Santos Laguna to the Alamo City this summer and challenge ourselves against one of the top teams in Liga MX,” said SAFC Managing Director Tim Holt. “The inclusion of this marquee match…will ensure yet another fantastic atmosphere at Toyota Field.”
Tracing its roots back to 1983, Santos has won five first division titles, most recently the 2015 Clausura and Campeon de Campeones, contested by the Apertura and Clausura winners. The club also won the Copa MX in 2014 and played in two CONCACAF Champions League finals in 2012 and 2013, losing both. Santos most recently finished fifth in the 2017 Clausura and was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
While this is SAFC’s first international friendly, Santos Laguna is no stranger to them, and even no stranger to San Antonio. Twice they’ve played friendlies here against fellow Mexican clubs, most recently Club America at the Alamodome in July 2016 as well as Club Tijuana at Toyota Field in October 2013.
The match in San Antonio will be the second of three club friendlies in the US which Santos has announced. They’ll also play Chivas de Guadalajara in Dallas on July 2 and Tigres in Austin on July 12.
