San Antonio Athenians Soccer Club defeated FC Austin Elite 4-1 on Saturday night at Blossom Soccer Stadium, with the scoreline perhaps flattering the visitors.
The Athenians dominated from early on and had the ball in the back of the net as early as the fourth minute, but an offside call prevented the home side from grabbing the early lead.
The Athenians kept up their pressure though and finally found the opening goal they’d been fighting for in the 29th minute. Leslie Rios crossed the ball in from the right corner of the 18-yard box and Christina Nunez headed it back across goal and in.
As much as the home side was dominating in the first half, the visitors did muster a few chances, mostly toward the end of the half. Perhaps their best came in the 36th minute as an FC Austin Elite player crossed in from the right, but nobody was in front of goal to redirect the ball into the net.
The Athenians doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time off a corner kick. After FC Austin Elite’s goalkeeper tipped the set piece onto the post, Kelly Lochte was able to prod the ball home after a quick goalmouth scramble.
The home side wasted no time getting forward in the second half, scoring within a minute of the restart. Ana Campa lofted the ball forward for her sister Marlyn, who sent the ball into the center for Allison Fahey to blast past the FC Austin Elite goalkeeper.
Continuing to fly forward, the Athenians narrowly missed a chance to score their fourth in the 52nd minute. Fahey retrieved a loose ball just left of goal and cut it back to the center of the box, but Becca Mays’ shot was stopped by the opposing goalkeeper’s leg on the line and ultimately cleared.
Marlyn Campa got the Athenians’ fourth and final goal of the night in the 63th minute. After Isabella Valdez won the ball back in midfield, she played it through for Marlyn Campa to run onto and slide past the goalkeeper.
It could’ve been a handful of Athenians scores in the 69th minute if not for the frame of the goal. Nicole Galan took a shot from the top of the box and it bounced off one post and across the face of goal but ultimately away from danger.
The Athenians never took their foot off the gas, but none of their chances for the rest of the match found the back of the net. Whether it was because of a shot off target, blocked or saved, the goal tally stayed where it was.
As dominant as they were, the Athenians may be disappointed to have not kept a clean sheet, letting a goal in just a couple minutes before the final whistle. As Athenians goalkeeper Raeann Garcia came out to try and grab a ball sent into the box, one FC Austin Elite attacker centered the ball for another, allowing for an easy tap-in.
It’s now a quick turnaround for the Athenians as they play Lonestar SC on Sunday in both teams’ final match of the season. San Antonio previously lost at Lonestar SC 3-0 on June 11.
