Goalkeeper Lee Johnston will remain with San Antonio FC for the 2018 season, the club announced on Friday.
Johnston has been with the Alamo City outfit since the start of their inaugural season in 2016. As third-choice goalkeeper though, his opportunities have been limited, playing just one whole US Open Cup match and 102 minutes across two USL games in 2017, allowing one goal in each competition.
“Lee’s a very energetic ‘keeper – he’s young, he’s hungry and I think that throughout these couple of seasons, he has enriched his goalkeeper craft,” said SAFC Goalkeeping Director Juan Lamadrid when Johnston was thrust into USL action in 2017. “He brings a lot of positivity to the team, to the training sessions.”
Despite limited chances to showcase his work, Johnston has continued to train hard and learn from Lamadrid and the goalkeepers he’s understudied for. In particular, Johnston credited his colleagues for giving him pointers about his positioning and footwork.
Johnston presumably remains the third-choice goalkeeper behind Diego Restrepo and Matt Cardone. If there’s anything we’ve learned from SAFC’s first two seasons though, there’s strength in depth at the position and an opportunity will present itself to the backups sooner than expected.
