San Antonio Athenians Soccer Club has halted all operations and will not compete in the 2018 Women’s Premier Soccer League season, the club announced Friday. They played just one season before taking the hiatus.

The announcement also came while Athenians SC was looking for a new head coach and had postponed tryouts for 2018 because of it.
The Athenians made their one season of existence count though, nearly reaching the WPSL playoffs and hosting two friendlies with Liga MX Femenil teams and another with the U.S. Air Force women’s team.
They also drew respectable crowds and managed to give back to the community with a Thanksgiving food drive and fundraiser for the family of a San Antonio police officer killed in the line of duty.
While there was never a solid link between Athenians SC and San Antonio FC, the clubs’ paths did cross in at least one big way in 2017. The Athenians were present at SAFC’s friendly against Club Santos Laguna on July 8, 2017, after which SAFC player Billy Forbes successfully proposed to the Athenians’ Michelle Hogan.
While the wording of Friday’s announcement isn’t reassuring, the fact that the club doesn’t completely rule out returning will leave fans and followers with a glimmer of hope.
