The San Antonio Blossoms were admitted to the Women’s Premier Soccer League and will compete in the 2018 season, the club and league announced Thursday. The club is backed by the local Classics Elite soccer academy, sharing staff members and operations.
The Blossoms announced their own staff Thursday morning. Marco Barros is the club’s president while Aaron Metzger and Owen Collie will serve as associate head coaches with the former also acting as general manager.
Lindsey Tubbs, Lisa Tomenendal, Erica Michaud, Rebecca Mays, Briana Zunker and Taylor Olson have already been announced as players for the club. Tomenendal and Mays played with San Antonio Athenians SC, the city’s previous WPSL team, in 2017.
“Our staff has strong ties in the women’s game at the club, collegiate, and professional levels, so we will use those connections to field a talented team with strong ties to the San Antonio soccer community,” Collie said. “We have commitments from current and former collegiate players, current WPSL players, and standout youth players.”
The club’s name pays homage to the Battle of Flowers parade, which first took place in 1891 and was the basis for the annual Fiesta festivities in San Antonio. Commemorating the battles of the Alamo and San Jacinto in the Texas Revolution, woman decorated various vehicles of the time with flowers and threw blossoms at each other.
“It was important for us to have a name that reflects and celebrates the history of our great city and the strong women that are an integral part of that history,” said Guadalupe Alvarez-Metzger, the club’s director of operations.
The Blossoms are one of 23 new clubs in the WPSL, bringing the league’s total to 108 and making them the largest women’s soccer league in the world.
Thursday’s announcement comes just 13 days after Athenians SC announced they would go on hiatus in 2018 after just one season in the WPSL.
While Athenians SC played at Blossom Soccer Stadium in 2017 and the venue would be fitting for the new club, it has not yet been announced where they will play.
