Texas rivals San Antonio FC and Rio Grande Valley FC played to a scoreless draw in a preseason “friendly” Friday night at Toyota Field three weeks prior to the start of the 2018 United Soccer League season.

The first chance of the match went the way of the visitors in the 10th minute after RGVFC defender Jhon Montano redirected a cross just wide with his head.

After a bit more RGVFC pressure, SAFC looked to open the scoring four minutes later off a counterattack. The ball was only half-cleared and fell to midfielder Kris Tyrpak, but his shot was blocked.

SAFC found their two best chances of the first half in the 29th and 30th minutes through two midfielders. First, Pecka wriggled through the RGVFC defense and fired a shot just right of the post, then Connor Presley latched onto a ball brought down a few yards in front of goal but fired wide left as he tried to place the ball in the bottom corner.

Chances were rarer in the second half, sparing spectators the shambolic shooting of the first half. SAFC did put together a noteworthy attack in the 69th minute as Presley crossed a ball from the right with too much power, Tyrpak retrieved it and his cross in from the left saw midfielder Sonny Guadarrama’s diving header deflected above the goal.

“We played it like we would a regular season game and I thought the application was good, but now we have to tidy up things on both sides of the ball,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell after the match. “The bottom line for us is that we want to make sure we’re efficient.”
The two sides will meet again on May 12 at HEB Park in Edinbutrg, Texas, and at Toyota Field for the next time in the last game of the USL season for each side on Oct. 13.
SAFC will play one more preseason match on March 10 against Tulsa Roughnecks FC in another match at Toyota Field but closed to the public.
