After losing their 2018 season opener in Sacramento on March 17, San Antonio FC (1-1-0) will again travel to the California, this time facing Los Angeles Galaxy II (0-1-1) at the StubHub Center on Saturday.
While SAFC and Los Dos have split the two matches between them in San Antonio over the last two seasons, both encounters on the west coast have ended in a 1-1 draw. SAFC managed to return with a point each time thanks to late goals from Carlos Alvarez in 2016 and Michael Reed in 2017.
SAFC defender and all-time minutes leader Greg Cochrane was present at practice Thursday but not a full participant, so Mike Seth is likely to start his second match in a row at left back. While listed as a forward on SAFC’s roster, Seth has experience playing on the wings and particularly as a full back.
It’s pretty easy to step in when you’ve got a good group of guys surrounding you. I can play a lot of positions, so I feel comfortable wherever I need to be put.”
Another noteworthy element of SAFC’s lineup March 24 against Saint Louis FC was the inclusion of the young winger Connor Presley in the starting lineup. While on paper he wasn’t involved in either goal for SAFC, he twice played the penultimate pass first to Kris Tyrpak and later Mikey Lopez as they assisted each other. Two respectable outings so far this season as well as his high workrate could see Presley keep his spot in the starting lineup Saturday.
The Los Dos-SAFC match will take place following the first ever matchup between the Galaxy first team and Los Angeles FC, also at the StubHub Center. Fans attending that match will be permitted to stay for the USL match afterward, which is also Los Dos’ home opener. SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell expressed some excitement at the festivities before his team’s match but said they won’t let it affect them too much.
I think it’s a very exciting opportunity for all the players at the game to play postgame of the first LA derby, (but) we’ll just kind of ignore those surroundings and prepare ourselves physically and mentally for the match ahead.”
