A familiar opponent visits Toyota Field Wednesday as San Antonio FC (USL) hosts Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL) in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

SAFC is coming off a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against USL basement dwellers Tulsa Roughnecks in league play, though the defensively heavy team racked a 4-0 victory in Open Cup play earlier in the week.

After training Tuesday, midfielder Mikey Lopez emphasized the club’s goal of winning as many trophies as are available to them this season.

The squad Head Coach Darren Powell played in the club’s second round matchup was mostly made up of players who haven’t found their way into consistent minutes this season. With such a crowded schedule between league and cup play, we’re likely to see a rotation in this match as well.

One Switchbacks player who could be overly comfortable at Toyota Field is former SAFC striker AJ Ajeakwa. AJ is currently in a three-way tie as team-leading scorer in league play with 2 goals in the 2018 USL season, though he hasn’t scored in the U.S. Open Cup this year. The California native joined the Colorado club in September 2017 after being released by San Antonio FC.

Colorado will need any advantage available as the club is currently 1-4-0 on the road in USL play, their one win being a 4-0 routing of Reno 1868 in April.
