Toyota Field was rocking after San Antonio FC advanced in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup on penalty kicks over Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC just over a month ago.
Now facing off for the first time in USL play this season, Colorado Springs will look to avenge their early exit by continuing a streak of defeating SAFC in Colorado. The Texas club is 0-2 in Colorado Springs since their first season in 2016.
The difference-maker could be that the team traveling in 2018 is significantly different from the rosters of 2016 and 2017.
SAFC’s league-best clean sheet days are behind them, but so too are the days of only generating single digit chances in a match. Whether deployed in a 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1, SAFC is getting the ball into the final third significantly better in 2018 than any previous season. While no player has stepped up to be “the guy” that fans can point to as the main scoring threat, the tactics of SAFC’s 2018 play have been effective.
Despite an 0-2 loss at home in their last match, SAFC’s squad has played more dangerously than we’ve seen in the past. If the rough edges can be smoothed, the 2018 team has the potential to make a run as we enter the second half of the USL season.
