San Antonio FC will face off against reigning Liga MX champions Club Santos Laguna Sunday night at Toyota Field in an international friendly. The two clubs met in a 2017 friendly, which saw the two sides play to a 1-1 draw before the visitors came out ahead 4-3 on penalties.
Santos is currently preparing for the Liga MX season, joining multiple Mexican clubs playing friendlies in the United States. San Antonio FC has a short break until their next USL match, which spans from last Wednesday’s match on July 4th to an away match in Orange County on July 14.
For San Antonio FC fans who want to see (insert player name here) get some time, Sunday’s friendly might be the best chance to do so. With unlimited substitutions, fans may see SAFC players who haven’t gotten much time this season trying to prove they deserve more minutes in USL play.
The friendly may also provide a path for local fans of Santos to start coming to San Antonio FC matches regularly. A Liga MX team in San Antonio would probably be one of the most-attended clubs in the nation, but unfortunately FIFA regulations will keep the San Antonio market in USL, MLS, and other USSF-sanctioned leagues.
No matter which players take the field, the match on Sunday should provide entertainment for fans of both sides.
