San Antonio FC is in a tough place heading into Saturday’s match against Swope Park Rangers. They’re currently on a record losing streak of three matches and most recently fell 4-0 away to Phoenix Rising FC on Wednesday, their worst league loss in club history.
When SAFC’s 2018 schedule was announced in January, eight out of 10 matches away toward the end of the season raised red flags. Three matches into that stretch, it appears the concern was justified, but the team is by no means in complete meltdown – yet.
Even though it’s a quick turnaround from Wednesday, SAFC’s best chance to right the ship is Saturday’s home match against Swope Park Rangers. Not only could SAFC snap their losing skid, but they could also put a bit of distance between themselves and Swope, who trail SAFC on goal difference alone for the eighth and final playoff spot.
“Every time we play in front of our fans is something special,” said SAFC defender Greg Cochrane. “They lift us and give us a certain kind of energy, so it will be good to be back in front of them and hopefully we can put in a performance to make them happy.”
SAFC has typically struggled with Swope though, winning only once in seven matches, and that came on the road in 2017 thanks to a well-executed counterattack and defensive masterclass. The two sides have drawn all three matches at SAFC’s Toyota Field, including 1-1 on April 7.
While Swope is about as good away as they are at home, they don’t enter Saturday in the best of form, currently winless in eight matches. Couple that with SAFC getting seven of their nine wins this season at home and the mild panic at this point of the season, SAFC may be poised to push through and get that second win over Swope – if they don’t, things could get ugly.
