San Antonio FC has been on one of the coldest streaks in the club’s history. After winning four matches in a row, SAFC has dropped four in a row.

While the blame should not be placed solely on his shoulders, goalkeeper Diego Restrepo had what can only be described as a meltdown on social media after the club’s 0-4 loss in Phoenix.

We have (re)entered the Cardone era.

While the squad gave up two goals in their previous match, a 2-1 loss to Swope Park Rangers, Cardone’s goalkeeper skills were mostly on point with the two opposing goals coming primarily from miscommunications with the defense.

Obviously Cardone needs to help eliminate those miscommunications, but “The Beard” has done well with arguably a less-talented squad after taking over for Josh Ford in 2016.

On the other side of the pitch, the attack has been improving recently. The biggest criticism is how reliant the squad can be on winger Omar Gordon. But the addition of winger Lance Laing along with the improved 10 play from Ethan Bryant and Mikey Lopez should give Cardone and the defense some cushion if needed.

SAFC Quotes from this week:

Head Coach Darren Powell after the loss to Swope Park Rangers:

“Momentum is a massive thing in soccer. We had some good momentum going into a couple of away games and we’ve lost that a little bit, so now we have to respond. I don’t think anyone can say they didn’t work hard to give themselves opportunities to get back in the game and I think we had some wonderful opportunities to do so. That’s soccer; we can’t put ourselves down, we don’t have time to dwell on it because have to get ready for the next match.”

Defender Darnell King after the loss to Swope Park Rangers:

“We just need to change the momentum. Losing happens, it happens to the best teams, but we just have to bounce back and get back on our winning streak that we had a few weeks ago. It’s important that we stick together as a team and as a whole organization and just keep fighting to get into that playoff position.”
